Riot confirms fighting game in development; just waiting for breakout indie hit to clone

With the worst-kept secret in gaming revealed at EVO, gamers have been left waiting with bated breath to hear when Riot Games would be releasing their much-anticipated fighting game title.

Sources close to Riot’s newly-founded fighting game division revealed to Fireball Esports earlier this week that the company is in “wait and watch mode,” as they themselves are eagerly awaiting a small independent company releasing a breakout new fighting game.

“Riot is known for making genre-defining games… that were cloned from the same genre,” the source said.

“The problem that your average game has with the fighting game genre is that they’re all too similar – Street Fighter, Dragon Ball Z Fighter, Super Smash Bros – they’re all just platformer games.

“What Riot is waiting for is potentially another Dota 2-mod that captures that ‘essence’ of fighting games, but maybe breaks the mould just enough to make it sound revolutionary. They’ll jump straight on that.”

Fireball Esports can confirm the publication has already deployed a team of researchers to trawl Dota 2 custom games to potentially discover Riot Games’ next major release.
